Coleman was raised in Blackpool, Lancashire. Coleman attended Arnold School Blackpool as head girl. She also scored every A grade in her A-level exams. In 2009, she was awarded nominated in the two categories: Best Actress-Sexiest Female and Best Performance Dramatic. Coleman received a TV Choice Award nomination in the category of Best Actress. Steven Moffat, the producer of Doctor Who confirmed in a 21st March press conference in 2012 that Coleman will play Matt Smith's partner following the departure of Karen Gillan left. Moffat chose to cast her in the role since she seemed to have the strongest chemistry with Smith. Additionally, she was quicker than him.
